DESpina Bifida
A congenital neural tube defect affecting the spinal cord.
Because the spinal cord did not develop normally during pregnancy, the nerve signals that control the bladder and bowel are altered from birth.
Most people concerned follow a long-term programme: daily intermittent catheterisation and bowel irrigation, to protect the kidneys and gain independence.

Definition
Spina bifida is an incomplete closure of the spine during pregnancy. Depending on the level, it affects walking, the bladder and the bowel.
Causes
An abnormality in the development of the neural tube in the first month of pregnancy; sufficient folic acid intake reduces the risk.
Diagnosis
- Prenatal ultrasound.
- Maternal blood test; urodynamic assessment after birth.
Treatments
Closure surgery, sometimes before birth. The bladder is followed from childhood: intermittent catheterisation, medicines and kidney monitoring. A bowel programme completes the care.
